While the tough economy has struck out countless businesses, A&R Tarpaulins Inc. has its bases covered. The manufacturer, which was recently nominated for a Spirit of the Entrepreneur Award, started exporting products to Singapore.

“We manufacture a variety of fabric products,” said Bud Weisbart, A&R vice president. “We don’t just stick to tarps and truck patches; under our AR Tech and AR Industries brands, we engineer aerospace and architectural fabric products. This diversity has been instrumental in our continued global success, despite the economy.”

After continued growth in the United States, A&R began exporting its high-strength fabric repair tape, SKP®, to Singapore this year. The company plans to continue expanding its global reach to other markets through online sales, capitalizing on its product diversity.

Often recognized for its innovation and commitment to excellence, A&R was recently nominated for an innovative entrepreneur award. The 8th Annual Spirit of the Entrepreneur Awards was given in seven categories. Nominations started with 159 companies, were narrowed down to 45 semifinalists and ultimately 21 finalists. A&R was one of three finalists in the 2010 Innovative Entrepreneur Award category.

“Doing business is about more than just the bottom line,” said Carmen Weisbart, president of the engineered fabric product manufacturing firm. “It’s about innovation and entrepreneurship; it’s about challenging ourselves to do our best.”
