“Controlled chaos” defines space

The commercial cornerstone event of the London Design Festival is the 100% Design exhibition, staged at the Earls Court Exhibition Centre. Industrial designer Benjamin Hubert was commissioned to design an auditorium space for the September 18-21, 2013, event that would accommodate lectures for participants while not discouraging passers-by. Hubert developed a hanging structure comprised of 40,000 hanging modules made of injection-molded polypropylene in various colors, each with multiple branches that create an impression of a forest.

Named “AMASS: Controlled chaos,” the installation has three major sections to define space without visual barriers. The three sections can be connected in several different orientations to build variation into the structure. The branched form of AMASS was “inspired by the controlled randomness found in nature and the building blocks of life,” according to 100% Design.
