Antimicrobial textiles are in, certifiably

Industry News | May 1, 2014 | By:

Between 2013 and 2018 the global market for antimicrobial agents for all end uses, including textiles, is forecast to grow by 12 percent annually, partly in response to demand for antimicrobial fibers, textiles and apparel, according to Issue 47 of Performance Apparel Markets from Textiles Intelligence. Consumers focused on health risks, personal hygiene and active lifestyles will drive demand for textiles that protect from germ-causing illness, infections and body odor. The report also notes concern among consumers about the safety of antimicrobial treatments, such as silver nanoparticles and triclosan. Antimicrobial products that offer high efficacy, durability and environmental certification for safety will see the strongest gain in sales. Safety worries will also spur the search for natural antimicrobial compounds.
