Retractable roof to be installed by 2016.

Birdair Inc. was selected by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and architectural design and planning firm Rossetti to supply a 210,000-square-foot, PTFE membrane, retractable roof for the Arthur Ashe Stadium, with expected installation by 2016. The roof is part of a five-year transformation of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, home of the U.S. Open, set to be completed in 2018.

Rossetti designed the new stadium with general contractor Hunt, engineering firm WSP, and mechanization engineering firm Geiger. Hunt contracted with Birdair for its design and installation expertise and unique PTFE membrane roofing system.

The PTFE fiberglass membrane roof will close from two sides, on glides, in five to seven minutes, providing fans with comfort and protection from the elements while allowing daylight to reach the stadium’s tennis courts.
