Recognition for Blue Jeans Go Green™ program.

The Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles Association (SMART), the Bureau of International Recycling’s Textiles Division (BIR) and the Council for Textile Recycling (CTR) held the first International Textile Recycling Summit (ITRS), June 2, in Miami, Fla. Conference attendees discussed trends, concerns and emerging markets in the used clothing recycling industry.

In addition to seminars and panel discussions, the organizations presented Cotton Inc. with the “Leadership in Sustainable Apparel – Recycling Innovator Award” for its Blue Jeans Go Green program. Since its inception in 2006, Blue Jeans Go Green has diverted more than 600 tons of denim out of landfills. It has generated more than 2 million square feet of Ultratouch™ denim home insulation used by builders and home-owners and provided as grants to U.S. civic institutions and Habitat for Humanity programs.

Denim of any color, and in any condition, can be converted into home insulation. For information on recycling unwanted denim products, visit the Blue Jeans Go Green website.
