Don’t forget your boots

Eco-friendly, practical boots fold up for easy packing and stowing.

‘Sardines,’ by designer Estel Acaraz, are foldable rain boots that can be folded up, secured with a flexible strap and stowed away or packed for travel. Made of injection-molded thermoplastic polyurethane—a highly elastic, recyclable plastic—the boots squash down to just a fifth of their original size.

Similar in style to the Wellington boots first constructed (out of leather) in the 17th century to protect soldiers in battle, the boots have changed with their function over the years. Today “Wellies” suggest a boot used to protect from wet, muddy and snowy weather and terrain conditions. But traditionally, the boots take up a lot of space in the entry or closet. Alcaraz thought a boot that could be compacted into a small space—like a sardine—made a lot of sense.
