"To be able to use our products and wrap a utilitarian structure—such as a parking garage—and make it an eye-catching attraction, really shows the versatility of tensile architectural membrane,” says Thomas Connell, business development manager, Birdair North America. “It’s not only aesthetically pleasing, but it is energy efficient and highly durable.” Photo: Birdair Inc.

Birdair Inc., Buffalo, N.Y., has been chosen to both clad and top a new $19-million parking garage providing 609 parking spaces near the Pompano Fishing Pier in Pompano Beach, Fla.

The structure will feature 16 sail-shaped façade canopies and 15 identical rooftop PTFE membrane units. The total surface area of membrane will be more than 27,000 square feet. Kaufman Lynn is the design-builder on the project working in conjunction with the architectural firm Currie Sowards Aguila and structural engineer LEAP and Associates. Birdair’s scope of work includes the design, fabrication, supply and installation of the PTFE membrane, structural steel, cables and clamping.

PTFE, known by the brand name Teflon®, coats a woven fiberglass to form a membrane that is durable and weather-resistant. PTFE fiberglass membranes are Energy Star and Cool Roof Rating Council certified, and reflect as much as 73 percent of the sun’s energy. Certain grades of PTFE fiberglass can absorb 14 percent of the sun’s energy while allowing 13 percent of natural daylight and 7 percent of re-radiated energy (solar heat) to transmit through.
