In 2008, California adopted an ordinance that mandates the covering of outdoor escalators to control water run-off during rainstorms. To that end, Fabritec designed tensioned canopies to cover four escalators in downtown Oakland, Calif. Fabritec’s design differed from the traditional barrel-type covers most often used for this type of application and reflected existing design elements of the plaza. The building code states that the structure must exceed the dimensions of the escalators by 15 degrees, which proved challenging due to existing walls. In an effort to maintain safety in evening hours, the client requested a highly translucent fabric to enable security guards to monitor activity underneath the structure at night.
