Fibertect cotton-carbon decontamination cloth now commercially available

First Line Technology, Chantilly, Va., a manufacturer of disaster preparedness equipment and supplies for first responders and the military, is now marketing Fibertect through a network of distributors. It’s available as preshaped mitts for personal wipedowns, individual wipe cloths and pads, and in rolls perforated to produce 12-inch by 12-inch sheets. It also comes in a biodegradable raw cotton outer layer over an activated carbon layer for cleaning up oil spills and trapping vapors that can make cleanup crews ill.

The product was developed at The Institute of Environmental and Human Health at Texas Tech University. According to company sources, the fabric is undergoing additional reviews, including consideration by the National Guard for nationwide deployment. Uses are being considered for Fibertect to help with some aspects of the cleanup in Japan following the recent earthquake, typhoon and radiation leaks.
