Shade canopies keep California students safe
Specialty Fabrics Review | May 2010
Recess takes the edge off rambunctious elementary school students, but officials for the Pasadena Unified School District want the bright California sunshine tempered with shaded play areas that block UV rays and cool temperatures to keep youngsters safe. Southern Hemisphere Shades (SH Shades), Sacramento, Calif., installed high density polyethylene shade canopies recently in three Pasadena elementary schools to protect students from the risk of skin cancer and heat illness.
The canopies block up to 98 percent of harmful UV radiation and are breathable, fade-proof, mildew- and rot-resistant, and Class A fire rated. The fabric shelter can drop temperatures beneath by up to 25 degrees on blazing hot days. The structures meet Department of State Architect standards for California, making them a safe choice for school use. Learn more at www.shshade.com.
