Clearspan building contains composting

When the farm managers in the University of Connecticut’s College of Agriculture recognized the need to better manage farm waste, they installed an 83-foot-wide by 120-foot-long ClearSpan Hercules truss arch building, citing its affordability and the potential for expansion. Their goal was to reduce the risk of runoff that might affect water quality in nearby ponds, stream and wetlands. Long term, the college intends to reduce and eventually eliminate the practices of stockpiling and land-applying manure, decrease farm waste volume, provide research, education and outreach opportunities for the university’s programs, and add the ability to compost campus leaves and landscaping waste.
