Nanotechnology enhances features of hiking boots

The V-Lite Altitude Ultra WPi boot from Hi-Tek features ion-mask™ waterproofing technology on its nubuck leather upper. The ion-mask process was originally developed for military clothing to repel chemical agents. Using patented plasma technology, the ion-mask process enhances products with an invisible polymer mask that repels oil and water without affecting the look or feel of the shoe. By enhancing every fiber, as opposed to just the outer layer, the entire shoe, inside and out, is treated, eliminating the need for a waterproof membrane or “bootie construction.” The shoe stays cleaner longer, and is lighter than its membrane equivalent.
