I’m in California and need to know what the prevailing wage is for awning installation. Can you advise me?
Prevailing wage is something that is used in bidding on public works-related projects, to make sure the wage you’re paying your staff is comparable to what the majority of workers doing similar work in your city or state are paid. This program comes out of California’s Division of Labor Statistics and Research; the website for more information is www.dir.ca.gov/DLSR/PWD/index.htm. When we looked at the categories, we didn’t see anything specifically for awnings. We did find, however, something called a special prevailing wage determination, which is used when a craft is not covered by a general determination. Requests for this special prevailing wage determination must be made 45 days prior to the bid advertisement date.
We contacted some other awning manufacturers in California for advice. One advised to check and make sure that the bid you’re working on meets the monetary threshold for requiring a prevailing wage. Another respondent advised that they’ve used the “Laborer, General or Construction” category to determine their prevailing wages. should be in the bid specs
if you're bidding public works then the reference to the determination will be in the bid specs.
