For the fourth consecutive year, OMNOVA Solutions Inc., Fairlawn, Ohio, has won the Award for Excellence in Environmental, Health, Safety and Security Performance from the Ohio Chemistry Technology Council. In 2008, OMNOVA’s Mogadore, Ohio, chemicals facility integrated two new environmental improvements to its latex polymer manufacturing process. The facility installed a French auger press that separates quality latex from “prefloc” (a nonhazardous waste that used to end up in the local landfill), squeezes useable latex from the prefloc and returns it to the process, and recycles the rest. In addition, the company added a reverse osmosis system to purify water, an upgrade that allows reduction of corrosive chemical treatments, boiler backflushing and energy consumption.
