President Trump doubles tariffs on steel, aluminum imports

Industry News, News | June 4, 2025 | By: ATA

President Donald Trump has increased tariffs on most steel and aluminum imports from 25% to 50%, effective June 4.

The U.S. and the U.K. previously reached a trade deal May 8, agreeing to negotiate an alternative arrangement for the 25% Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum. According to President Trump’s June 3 executive order, steel and aluminum imports from the U.K. will remain taxed at 25%, with an option to adjust the rate of duty in the future as deemed necessary.

“On or after July 9, 2025, the Secretary may adjust the applicable rates of duty and construct import quotas for steel and aluminum consistent with the terms of the EPD, or he may increase the applicable rates of duty to 50% if he determines that the United Kingdom has not complied with relevant aspects of the EPD,” states the executive order.
