Macon City Auditorium repair includes a roofing membrane system

A few years shy of its 100th birthday, the Macon City Auditorium in Macon, Ga., is getting a makeover, starting with a new roofing membrane system. The Classical-style structure, surrounded on three sides with limestone Doric columns, is on the National Register of Historic Places and has hosted the likes of the Allman Brothers and Oprah Winfrey. But recently, deterioration of the building has made it harder to book marquee acts.

Edifice Consulting Inc. led the project that involved restoration of the copper dome, replacing the structure’s low slope roof system and updating its trench drain, according to information from roofing membrane supplier Fibertite®.  The dome roof is divided into upper and lower sections by an expansion joint and a slight elevation change; inspections revealed that water was becoming trapped between a concrete deck and a modified bitumen roof on the low slope section just below the dome.

The membrane system helped the project partners achieve several goals: its light weight helped to offset the weight of the new drainage system, its adherence system met the project’s wind uplift rating requirement, and color options matched the original appearance of the building.

“This project was difficult at times and the FiberTite system helped us thread the needle,” says Jody Usry, president of Edifice Consulting. “We never go into a project by specifying a manufacturer; we always determine the client’s best interest, and FiberTite was the clear answer. This was a once-in-a-lifetime job and that can be scary, but everything turned out extremely well.”
