Less than two years after its launch, Mexico-based vegan cactus leather creator Desserto® has garnered eight international awards.

The most recent award is in the materials category in the 2021 Vegan Homeware Awards from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the world’s largest animal rights organization. The award recognizes designers and brands that meet the growing demand for sustainable and compassionate decor.

Additional recognition for Desserto has come from Material ConneXion 2020 (New York); Green Product Award 2020 (Germany); Monte Carlo Fashion Week 2020 (Monaco); Good Design Award Gold Accolade, Fashion Impact 2020 (Australia); second finalist, LVMH Innovation Award (France); Innovation Award, Samsung Design Icons 2020 and the PETA Compassionate Business Award 2021.

Desserto leather is derived from the perennial nopal cactus, also known as the prickly pear. Leaves are harvested every six to eight months, and only the mature leaves of the plant are cut, with no damage to the cactus itself. No irrigation system, herbicides or pesticides are required, and the cactus tolerates low temperatures during winter without dying.
