The artificial intelligence (AI) in your everyday work clothing won’t manage your inventory, but it will definitely help you out. In partnership with clim8®, Carhartt® Inc. has released the X-1 Smart Heated Vest, which detects when to start or stop heating based on the wearer’s activity (and resulting body heat) and environment. The company’s goal was to create a lightweight, durable garment that prevents people from having to layer on lots of bulk while on the job or overheating in cold-weather gear.

The vest has three strategically mapped heat zones across the torso. Powered by clim8 intelligent thermal technology, the vest monitors temperatures in real time and responds by heating up or shutting off. It also detects when someone puts the vest on or takes it off. And of course, there’s an app for that. It pairs to a smartphone over a Bluetooth® connection to calibrate the vest to the wearer’s comfort level.

The product is a part of Carhartt X™, a “new program which is designed to push the limits of what is possible in workwear,” the company reports. Carhartt itself has been around since 1889.

clim8 was founded in France in 2016 and bills itself as strong in thermophysiology, the Internet of Things (IoT) and e-textiles.
