“The Organic Tree” was created to make a fan experience at the Australian Open more comfortable.

VDM Group and Pattons implemented a detailed breakdown of the design, engineering, fabrication and installation process and spent the first week planning. Although this used up a week of its 12-week timeline, it resulted in thorough project management.
They started design using a steel frame to meet coverage requirements. VDM Group and Pattons also used the latter company’s Finite Element engineering software to run ongoing analysis that could update member sizes every time geometry changed slightly.
VDM Group and Pattons prototyped several fabric visuals to create distinct patterns on the fabric, which would transfer this shade pattern to the grass below. They also wanted the capability to attach the patterns to the basecloth. In the end, they pre-sewed the black PVC patterns onto the shade cloth before seaming.
Weekly meetings with the team helped overcome challenges to ensure steel, fabric, installation and lighting worked in harmony. The result was excellent shade coverage for fans that made an aesthetic impact, with shade patterns during the day and extensive lighting at night. The final project was installed in 10 days and quickly disassembled post-event.
The project was recognized with an Award of Excellence in the 2024 International Achievement Awards.
