Functionally aesthetic shade solution

The most challenging aspects of installing the low-profile tension umbrellas at Fashion Island in Newport Beach, Calif., for Irvine Company, are features patrons will never see.

For instance, mounting the umbrellas over an underground parking garage meant footings couldn’t be used. A custom bracket was engineered to secure the umbrellas to the slab to ensure they withstood imposed loads. For aesthetic appeal, the base plates needed to remain hidden beneath the floor pavers, so J. Miller Canvas LLC developed cover plates to conceal the umbrella attachment hardware.

Also, the customer did not want the light fixture visible on the umbrella rafter arms. To accomplish this goal, J. Miller Canvas opted for solid rods instead of tubing and carefully milled out steel to create a space for the LED light strip within the rod.

The customer was very pleased with the final product. The umbrellas enhance Fashion Island with elegant architecture, provide shade and lighting, require little maintenance and are wind-resistant—making them a valuable, lasting investment in beautifying the space.

The project was recognized as an Outstanding Achievement in the 2024 Advanced Textiles Association International Achievement Awards.
