A client came to Boat Cover Company NZ in Auckland with a project on a 69-meter (226-foot) Samaya Feadship. The work brief requested the enclosure of the upper aft deck, with the goal of turning the space into an air-conditioned workout area, necessitating that it be airtight. The enclosure also needed to be removable, for long ocean passages and time spent docked.
The company’s fabricators created the deck-to-ceiling enclosure using 3-millimeter polycarbonate panels, approximately 2.5 by 2 meters (8 by 6.5 feet), which zip into a track system. A custom teak coaming was built to house the lower track, with precise alignment between upper and lower tracks critical for the system to work correctly while looking good. The enclosure also needed a door for access to the exterior deck and general day-to-day use.
The air-conditioned enclosure was a practical solution that transformed the area into more usable interior onboard space, and the owner and crew were “stoked with the end result,” according to the entry into the ATA New Zealand 2026 Awards for Excellence. It took the top prize in the Marine Fabrication, Exterior category and the overall Supreme Champion award.
A full report on the ATA New Zealand Conference and Trade Show will appear in the December show issue of Specialty Fabrics Review that also will wrap up Advanced Textiles Expo® 2026.
