Suicide prevention products for use in detention facilities pose a serious design challenge. Ferguson Safety Products has invented a textile-based solution to provide safe clothing and bedding for at-risk inmates. The result is the Dozer™, a safe sleeping surface that cannot readily be ripped or torn. The three-inch thick neoprene foam core mattress with a built-in pillow is made with 1050 ballistic nylon that has multiple urethane coatings incorporating fire retardant, fungicide and anti-mildew treatments. Testing has determined that the fabric will not crack or peel for 20 years when stored flat. The Safety Smock, designed by a detention-certified registered nurse, has no hooks, loops or buttons, and is made of quilted 1,000-denier nylon Cordura® with Tek 70 upholstery thread. Cordura is the strongest textile that can comfortably be worn against the body and is also washable in commercial laundry facilities.
