Ames Textile Corp. has been producing yarn since 1865, the oldest continuously operating textile company in the United States. Its synthetic yarn plant in Christianburg, Va., may have many more years to run under another banner, following the plant’s acquisition by 3A Throwing, Cookshire, Quebec, Canada. 3A Throwing, a yarn manufacturer that expanded its own production from 150,000 pounds in 1986 to more than 5 million pounds annually by 2001, touts the Ames’ plant efficiency. The Virginia facility twists polyester, nylon, polypropylene and more on modern 2-for-1 twisters, yarns used for broad and narrow weaving, knitting, braiding and other applications. The 77,000-square-foot Ames plant will be retained and expanded, continuing its product line and bringing new products to existing customers.
