Industrial product design often centers on utility, simplicity and mass-production rather than flow, drape or mood. London-based industrial and product designer Catherine Stolarski combines both aesthetics in “Loop,” a pendant lamp with a curving shade made of a single folded piece of 3-D fabric mesh material. The look is soft, a cross between a pillow and a cloud floating over household or office interiors. However, a diagram of the Loop lamp shows the simplicity of the design and its ease of construction.
Stolarski’s industrial design skills combined with her philosophy of work led her to join London’s Goldfinger Factory, a sustainable workshop, retail space and training school for unemployed or underemployed workers. The Goldfinger Factory’s mission is to improve lives through training people to up-cycle waste furnishings into new, trend-setting products. Stolarski serves as marketing manager while working on her own products and custom creations for clients.
