Frederick Utzinger III, a fourth-generation owner of Independent Awning and Canvas Co., Dayton, Ohio, passed away Aug. 15 at the age of 59.
Utzinger started in the awning business at age 14 while working beside his father. He took over the family business when his father passed in 1990, and he and his wife, Shirley, worked side by side to grow the business. He loved building custom awnings and would go to the extreme with design and function on his products.
