German biotechnology companies BRAIN Biotech AG and AMSilk GmbH have announced that they will collaborate to develop high-performance, bio-based protein fibers for the textile industry.

The biomaterials are useful in a variety of applications that include the apparel, medical and automotive markets. AMSilk produces biotechnological materials based on renewable carbon structural proteins that are not only recyclable but also 100% biodegradable. BRAIN Biotech is a specialist in industrial biotechnology with a focus on nutrition, health and the environment. With this new partnership, the companies aim to further optimize specific properties of the structural proteins for high-performance-oriented fields of application in the textile sector.

Petroleum-based textile fibers made of polyethylene or polyamide are known to be a source of microplastics as well as contributors to the unsustainable disposal of textiles in landfills. Bio-fabricated products hold enormous potential as sustainable material solutions for the future. Photo: © BRAIN Biotech AG
