The mattress brand Avocado, based in Los Angeles, Calif., is on a mission to increase sustainability in the mattress industry.
Each Avocado mattress is handcrafted in Los Angeles and features materials sourced directly from farms co-owned by the company, such as the brand’s latex, which is made from tree sap hand-collected at a farm in Guatemala, or the brand’s wool, which comes from the shearing of 200,000 sheep in India.
Avocado’s most popular mattress is the Avocado Green Mattress. Rather than glued, it is needle tufted by hand and has 2 inches or 5 inches of organic latex in its construction.
The Luxury Organic Mattress is the plushest option available, with 17 layers of organic and natural latex, wool, silk, hemp and cotton.
All of the company’s products, including its mattresses, bedding, pillows and furniture, are nontoxic and certified organic by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS).
These standards are recognized worldwide and endorsed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program to ensure textiles’ organic status, from gathering raw materials to manufacturing and labeling.
