A New Zealand seafood restaurant in need of a refresh to its outdoor patio turned to Kolorful Kanvas Ltd., of Christchurch. The project replaced the restaurant’s metal awning with a retractable fabric solution and outfitted the outdoor dining area with new screens and signage, making it look more like a part of the structure than an open patio. The biggest challenges came from a tight timeframe of just two days for the install and the 90-minute drive between the two businesses that meant there was no quickly “popping back to the shop” for anything.

The need for a flawless execution was high. “The designer who was also working on the restaurant was guided by our measurements,” says the awards entry about the project. “If our part was not correct, nothing would fit, as all other aspects that were being brought into the area was set around the OzTech [Retractable Roof System] and our measurements.” New built-in banquette seating was being custom crafted for the renovation.
The project also included “special translucent panels to make the structure watertight,” the notes state. “Drainage was channeled through the frame back to the building so there was no water runoff onto the footpath.”
Kolorful Kanvas prefabricated everything and once on-site worked with builders, designers and electricians for the install to achieve the “cozy and inviting space” the designer and client specified.
