Staff members of Scotland’s Golden Jubilee University National Hospital in Clydebank are testing their codesigned biodegradable and reusable surgical theater caps as part of a research project led by the University of Strathclyde and Heriot-Watt University.

The caps are made of cellulosic fiber and aim to replace around 800,000 single-use disposable theater caps that are used every year in Scottish hospitals. They were designed with bright colors and patterns to aid in alleviating patient anxiety, and they help medical practitioners identify one another in busy environments by displaying an individual’s role on the front.

The theater-cap project is part of the broader Design HOPES project (Healthy Organisations in a Place-based Ecosystem, Scotland). The caps completed manufacturing capability testing with a company outside of Glasgow prior to the testing at Golden Jubilee Hospital.

The Design HOPES collaboration aims to bring design researchers, universities and businesses together to aid in the transition to a green economy.
