Groveland Gallery in Minneapolis, Minn., will display textile artist Tim Harding’s work from his Photo Montage series July 19–Aug. 30, 2025.

The St. Paul, Minn.-based artist is known for hanging artworks that feature different fabrics layered to depict realistic and abstract scenes. His primary focus is reverse appliqué quilting, but for this series, he explored a new technique.
“More recently, my approach has been from a photographer’s perspective,” Harding states. “Starting with a highly representational image—a photograph—I’m manipulating and deconstructing that image towards abstraction.”

Inspired by the low-light sources he used in his nighttime photography, Harding sought to combine photographic and textile elements. He was inspired by the highlights and shadows and how they created “illusions of depth and motion.” The resulting pieces showcase scenes in nature made from photographs printed on the fabric.
Harding’s work has also been displayed in collections at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Minnesota Museum of American Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts, among others. He has also completed various artist fellowships through the Minnesota State Arts Board and Arts Midwest.
