Planet of the Grapes, based in France, makes sustainable leather alternatives from vineyard waste for clothing, accessories and car seats, among other products.
The company works with nearby vineyards to collect leftover skins, seeds and stems from annual harvests. This waste, known as grape marc or pomace, is processed in Provence, France, and sent to an Italian manufacturer to be turned into “Savigne by Planet of the Grapes”®.
Founded by Samantha Mureau, the company is focused on keeping its supply chain local.
“It was by discovering — and reflecting on the fact — that up to 95% of a product’s environmental impact comes from its materials, that I began to experiment in my own kitchen, with the desire to create something with a smaller footprint and rooted locally, in the vineyards that surround me,” says Samantha Mureau, company founder.
“Savigne by Planet of the Grapes” is available in the company’s three flagship colors — Jet Black, Radix Brown and Grape — and in multiple finishes, weaves and textures. It can also be produced in various other color palettes.
The company keeps grape marc in stock for custom orders of Savigne, which are produced in 150-centimeter-wide (about 59-inch-wide) rolls.
Planet of the Grapes has collaborated with several designers, including Rouslana Andriyanova, who created a dress inspired by winemaking that features “Savigne by Planet of the Grapes” in the Grape shade.
This Was Not an Animal x Planet of the Grapes was a collection created in partnership with Roman Raibaudi and features personalized pet collars and leashes.
The company also collaborated with Méhari Club Cassis to incorporate Savigne-based leather car seats in the Eden vehicle, a restored and electrified version of the Citroën Méhari utility vehicle.
