As our industry has evolved over the past century-plus, so has the magazine you’re reading now. And if you’re reading this online, the web and digital-only publications are definitely part of it. What began in November 1915 with the first publication of The National Tent & Awning Manufacturers Review steadily became more inclusive of a wider range of products as new materials, finishing treatments and niche products were invented over the ensuing decades.

The December 1942 of the National Canvas Goods Manufacturers Review has a black-and-white picture of a family gathered in a living room to hear a letter read from their serviceman. Behind them in the window is a textile with a blue star on it, signifying that he is overseas but alive. A framed picture of him is on top of the radio.
The soldier is pictured in a circle at the upper right of the image of the family. He is sitting in a Jeep.

The publication became The National Canvas Goods Manufacturer’s Review in 1924, then Canvas Products Review in 1958. “National” was eliminated from the organization name and from the magazine due to the growing number of Canadian members in the association. The publication’s next moniker was Industrial Fabric Products Review in 1966, then finally Specialty Fabrics Review in 2008.

A color image of the June 1986 cover of Industrial Fabric Products Review has a blue background. It pictures artwork of a horse race, with nylon represented by a brown horse and polyester by a black horse. The black horse is winning over nylon by a nose. The jockey for nylon is wearing a purple hat and striped shirt. The jockey for polyester is wearing a yellow hat and checked shirt.

Over the decades, the association and magazine content has been witness to two World Wars, astronauts landing on the moon, job offshoring and a global pandemic or two as well as the invention of nylon, polyester, aramids, airbags and inflatable sports domes, just to name a few innovations. The magazine has been there with news and expert insight to help our readers through all that change and its effects on our industry as it has happened.

The May 1990 cover of Industrial Fabric Products Review pictures a skydiver in the air, as one of the stories inside is about parachutes. Other stories are about casual furniture, the RV aftermarket, and high-performance thread.

For more than a century, Review—now supplemented by digital newsletters, a website and downloadable digital-only special issues (see the Resources area of this website for links to the shade and military e-editions)—has delivered timely, trusted industry information to help readers stay informed about their market areas.
