When Belgian textile designer Casalis returned to Milan Design Week in April after a three-year absence, the company made a statement with its signature style. Casalis worked with designer Anita Kars to create an experiential display inspired by a labyrinth. Visitors walked through a series of spaces and were met with the colors and textures of different Casalis designs around every turn.
One unique feature was an acoustic tunnel consisting of panels designed by Polish designer Aleksandra Gaca. The 3D textile combines matte and gloss, hard and soft to offer superior acoustic absorption in a striking design. When visitors walked through, they experienced the soundproofing capability firsthand as the fabric drowned out the noise of the show around them.
Casalis also used the show to debut several new collections. The Unfold collection of handcrafted carpets in bamboo or wool yarn, created by Netherlands designer Onno Raadersma, plays with circles and squares to create a unique, Bauhaus-inspired layout.
Another Netherlands designer, Liset van der Scheer, has created a collection of soft furniture and biodegradable carpets for Casalis. Velden poufs and cushions are knitted of high-quality, sustainable merino wool. The Earth line of carpets is truly inspired by nature: Made of organic wool, natural latex and plant-based dyes, the carpeting uses an innovative 3D tufting technique that mimics the texture and appearance of moss.
