Seatbelts save lives, and the conventional three-point seatbelt reduces the risk of serious head injury in frontal crashes by 45-75 percent. Other crash types, such as side impact or rollover accidents, pose different problems, so Autoliv Inc., Stockholm, Sweden, has developed a two-point shoulder seatbelt that helps hold the shoulder not restrained by the three-point seatbelt. The user slides the new belt over the shoulder, like a backpack strap, then clicks the three-point seatbelt as usual. Autoliv is currently being launched on Renault’s new electrical vehicle, Twizy. The company estimates that supplemental use of the two-point seatbelt would reduce the risk for severe injuries and fatalities by approximately 30 percent.
