In 2007, Lenzing AG of Lenzing, Austria, granted a license for pilot production of new types of man-made cellulose (lyocell) specialty fibers to smartfiber AG, Rudolstadt, Germany. The cooperative venture paid off, and in the future Lenzing will exclusively produce the specialty fibers smartcel™ and SeaCell®, both developed by smartfiber AG. SeaCell fibers contain active substances from seaweed that promote health, nurture skin and protect against cancer-causing free radicals. The element zinc is added to smartcel to improve skin care and promote hygiene. The pilot plant will be relocated from Rudolstadt to Lenzing, using smartfiber’s innovative and patented technology and Lenzing’s ability to achieve high levels of production.
