Eastman Chemical Co., Kingsport, Tenn., introduced its new Cyphrex™ microfibers at IDEA 13, the International Engineered Fabrics Conference and Expo, in April. The microfibers give producers of wet-laid nonwoven solutions an alternative fiber choice for applications such as filtration systems, specialty papers, battery separators and other products. Cyphrex microfibers can be customized in size, shape and material type (PET, PP and nylon), giving them functional and competitive advantages such as strength, uniformity and targeted permeability. The fibers are less than 5 microns in diameter, delivering a high surface-to-mass ratio and consistency in diameter distribution. Manufacturers can specify “precise, consistent and unique fiber designs that are thoughtfully and purposefully created for varied applications across numerous markets,” says Fred Dulin, director of microfibers platform at Eastman.
