Motorcycle airbags, in style

Projects | June 1, 2014 | By:

Leave it to Ducati Motor Holding S.p.A., the iconic Bologna, Italy, manufacturer of motorcycles since 1926, to be the first off the line with the newest in technology and safety. Ducati and partner Dainese S.p.A., Molvena, Italy, recently introduced the Ducati Multistrada D-air® motorcycle that comes standard with a wireless communication system that “talks” to the airbag unit in Street Ducati and Dainese jackets. The system protects the rider from first impact with a total airbag deployment time of 45 milliseconds.

The airbag passed rigorous tests set by TüV SüD, a
German certification company, for effectiveness in protecting the motorcyclist’s rib cage, vital organs, spinal column and neck from injury. The wireless communication between bike and jacket is continuous. A pneumatic system within the D-air with gas generators activates when it recognizes an event that could injure the rider. The technology is only offered in Europe until May 2014, after which Dainese will make it available to other motorcycle manufacturers interested in protecting customers from harm.
