As many textile and performance chemical companies move production to China, the demand for technical expertise is certain to rise. OMNOVA Solutions Inc., Akron, Ohio, operates two business units in China, producing polyurethane and vinyl-coated fabrics. In September, the company’s foundation announced a $5,000 grant to the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Education Development Foundation to fund scholarships for environmental science and engineering students at the Minhang campus. OMNOVA has invested more than $35 million in purchase, expansion and improvements at its Chinese plants, including emission-control equipment and more efficient coal slurry boilers to improve safety and environmental performance.
