At the International Defense Industry Fair 2013 in Istanbul, Turkey, two companies signed a letter of intent to cooperate on developing the best ballistic-protection material for armored vehicles. DSM Dyneema, the Dutch manufacturer of the ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fiber Dyneema®, will work with FNSS Savunma Sistemieri A. S., a Turkish manufacturer of armored vehicles. The two companies have collaborated on a major military vehicle project (soon to be jointly announced) and, in the future, plan to concentrate on spall liners inside armored vehicles. Spall liners are designed to protect against high explosive squash head anti-tank shells that produce a shock wave that can disable the vehicle or crew. Dyneema is up to 15 times stronger than quality steel and up to 40 percent stronger than aramid fibers, on a weight by weight basis.
Cooperation pledged between DSM Dyneema and FNSS
