Revolution by design: innovating for a better world

January 2nd, 2014 / By: / Industry News

Request for submissions, due Friday, Jan. 31, 2014.

The Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) is committed to the idea that design has the power to inspire change, transform lives, and make the world a better place. This enthusiasm is shared around the world by engineers, students, professors, architects, and social entrepreneurs who use design and design thinking to solve the problems of the 21st century.

When, in 2008, Philippe Starck announced to a German newspaper that he would shift his focus from the design of luxury objects to the design of useful things such as wind turbines, he declared: “everything that I designed is absolutely unnecessary.” In announcing his move away from the late twentieth-century trend of design for design’s sake, Starck joined a design revolution already underway, becoming one of a cadre of designers who eschewed the creation of highly-priced and highly-styled objects in favor of design projects meant to solve problems worldwide.

In 2014, MODA will spotlight this change with an exhibition titled “Revolution by Design: Innovating for a Better World,” to be on display at the museum in Midtown Atlanta from May 25 to August 3. Revolution by Design will demonstrate how designers, architects, community organizations, social entrepreneurs, students and professors practicing in Atlanta and across the Southeastern United States (Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky) are using design methodologies to tackle a wide-range of real-world challenges, from the purification of water to the provision of shelter for the homeless, and from the re-thinking of transportation systems to the development of technologies that increase mobility.

If you or your organization uses design to address a pressing problem in the world, please follow these submission guidelines to let the museum know about your project so that it can be considered for inclusion in the Revolution by Design exhibition.
