Industry News, News | October 2, 2015 | By:

The Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles Association (SMART) has launched its second annual SMART Upcycled Halloween Costume Contest.

Individuals are invited to enter homemade, upcycled Halloween costumes for a chance to win a $100 first prize Amazon gift card. Second and third prize winners will receive a $50 and $25 Amazon gift card, respectively.

The purpose of the contest is to encourage people to be creative in their costume choice in order to reduce textile waste. SMART is an international trade association of the for-profit textile recycling industry. According to the National Retail Federation, more than 157 million Americans will celebrate Halloween this year, spending more than $6.9 million on costumes and decorations, says Jackie King, SMART executive director.

To enter, participants must like SMART’s Facebook page and share at least one photo of their costume. Posts must be shared from the individual’s personal page and include a detailed description of the materials used to make the costume, the hashtag “#SMARTHalloween” and a tag to SMART’s page.

Costumes must be created using at least 70 percent of recycled textile materials, including used clothing, towels, linens and fabric scraps. Photos must be original and taken during the 2015 Halloween season between October 1 and 31. Submission deadline is Nov. 1 at 11:59 p.m. ET. SMART will announce the winners on Nov. 6.
