David Aberle is the president of Hoigaard’s Custom Canvas & Awnings in Plymouth, Minn. Since 1895, Hoigaard’s has been manufacturing and installing high-quality awnings and shade structures for commercial and residential clients. Here, Aberle shares his thoughts about the industry and offers some sound business advice.

How did you get involved in the company/industry?
Hoigaard’s Custom Canvas & Awnings has been a pioneer in the canvas and awning business. I was attracted to the high-quality customized solutions and rich history.

What are the biggest challenges you face?
Labor shortage and competition with low-cost, mass production awning competitors.

What are the biggest rewards?
Happy customers and energized employees.

What do you anticipate for your industry in the next five years? Ten?
Automation of the fabricating process.

What was the first job you ever had?
Working on my parent’s dairy and grain farm and construction.

What has been the most significant invention/technology you’ve observed in your life so far?
The power and pervasiveness of mobile devices.

How long have you been a member of IFAI?
C.J. Hoigaard was a founding member of IFAI and we have continued our membership ever since.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Plan your work and work your plan.

What are your hobbies outside of work?
I enjoy attending my children’s sporting events. I also enjoy hunting, farming and a good cigar.

Who has been your biggest influence, personally or professionally?
One of my biggest influences was a former CEO who pushed for continuous improvement and was never satisfied. It was a challenging time, but I learned many lessons personally and professionally.

What is number one on your bucket list?
I’d like to see the Minnesota Vikings win a Super Bowl.
