Sciessent has announced the results of recent tests with its Agion® antimicrobial treatment. According to the company, the treatment achieves 99.99 percent inactivation of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, in lab testing of medical textiles. The testing was conducted under ISO 18184 protocols and demonstrated that its effectiveness was maintained even after 20 launderings. The antimicrobial can be applied to knit or woven medical textiles as a finish, as was tested in this study, or incorporated into the polymer itself for nonwoven textiles in a melt-blown process. Paul C. Ford, CEO of Massachusetts-based Sciessent, says this “opens the door” for the product’s potential use in more applications, including N95 masks and other personal protective equipment (PPE).
