World Rally Championship race cars have incorporated Kevlar® EXO™ in their new crash-resistant fuel bladders, lowering the component’s weight by about 20%.

DuPont and Aero Tec Laboratories (ATL) had success with a similar collaboration for Formula 1 (F1) cars last year.

“Being able to apply our learnings beyond F1 moves us toward reaching our shared goal to further innovate equipment in the racing industry,” says Jill Clements, DuPont segment leader.

Leaders with Kevlar EXO and ATL plan to explore applications in other motorsport series such as NASCAR, IndyCar and Le Mans.

The new Kevlar EXO fiber’s balance of flexibility and lightweight strength has led to a number of applications beyond bullet-resistant vests, including its use for orbital debris protection in satellites.

Other recent Kevlar news: Arclin has acquired the aramids business segment from DuPont.
