Three judges of the U.S. Court of International Trade ruled May 7 that the 10% global tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump in February were illegal.
The 2–1 decision ruled that the tariffs imposed by the president under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 were “invalid” and “unauthorized by the law,” according to the court filing.
The ruling is the result of a case filed in March by 24 states and several businesses that challenged these tariffs. According to the court filing, the judges ruled in favor of the state of Washington, Burlap and Barrel Inc. and Basic Fun Inc., and dismissed the claims of the states of Oregon, Arizona, California, New York, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Wisconsin.
