The New York City Fire Department will upgrade its chemical protective clothing and has selected Demron™ radiation-blocking products for full-body suits, vests and blankets for first responders. Radiation Shield Technologies (RST), Coral Gables, Fla., developed Demron for multi-hazard protection from nuclear, biological, chemical, bomb and ballistic threats. The FDNY Hazardous Materials Company 1 already uses Demron, a nanopolymer compound fused between fabric layers, for radiation vests, shields and crew protection blankets. Demron shields against X-ray and low-energy gamma emissions, as well as high- and low-energy beta and alpha particles.
